Race, Ethnicity, and Pulmonary Function Test Interpretation

Program / Course Description 

The goal of this initiative is to address health care professional knowledge and competence gaps related to the ATS’ official statement on race, ethnicity, and PFT (pulmonary function test) interpretation; the recent scientific evidence supporting new race-neutral recommendations; and practical guidance for implementation at the local, institutional, and system levels.

Target Audience

The target audience for this education will be pulmonary and critical care specialists, surgeons, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and other clinicians who have a role in the interpretation of PFTs.  

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learners should be able to: 

  • Recognize the ATS’ official statement for clinicians on race, ethnicity, and PFT interpretation   
  • Identify the recent scientific evidence that supports new recommendations related to race-neutral interpretations of PFTs  
  • Evaluate case examples for the implementation of new PFT interpretation recommendations at the local, institutional, and system levels
