Methamphetamine Associated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Education, Awareness, and Dialogue
Program / Course Description
This program addresses the lack of awareness of methamphetamine associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (METH-PAH), including its epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and known pathophysiology; improving early detection, screening, and diagnosis of METH-PAH; and integrating approaches to the treatment of METH-PAH that seek to address both the PAH and underlying substance use disorder.
Target Audience
This educational activity is designed for pulmonary specialists, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates, as well as other health care professionals involved in managing patients with METH-PAH, such as addiction medicine specialists.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the learners should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of METH-PAH
- Explain the current understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking methamphetamine use to PAH development
- Identify key screening and diagnostic approaches for early detection of PAH in methamphetamine users
- Summarize a comprehensive approach to the treatment of METH-PAH that seeks to integrate pharmacotherapy for PAH and substance use disorder management
